While walking in Narragansett, Rhode Island, my wife and I discovered a moment that caused us to stop. There, moving gracefully across the quiet water, was a solitary white swan. The scene was so serene and unexpected that we had to capture it in a photograph.
White has long evoked purity, innocence and new beginnings. Yet what struck us most was not simply the swan, but what followed behind it. As it moved forward, its wake spread gently across the still water.
It brought to mind the idea behind what we are accomplishing at Destination Peace.
Like a ripple across quiet water, one act of peace can extend beyond itself, touching what follows and widening its reach.
History offers a poignant example. In some places, soldiers ventured into a “neutral zone” exchanged greetings and small gifts, and temporarily laid aside their weapons. The truce was neither universal nor lasting; soon, the terrible fighting resumed.
That is precisely why the moment remains so meaningful. A truce does not end a war. It demonstrates something smaller, yet profoundly human: even amid hostility, individuals can choose an interruption of violence and recognize the humanity of those across from them.
An armistice can stop the fighting. A cessation of hostilities can silence the weapons but lasting peace requires something more. It asks us to take that moment of stillness and carry it forward.
Watching a white swan move across the water in Narragansett, I was struck by what remained after it passed: a widening wake, quietly reshaping the surface behind it.
Peace works that way too.
It is not merely a destination we arrive at, or a feeling we manage to hold onto. Peace can be something we leave in our wake, in the tone or attitude we set, the tensions we refuse to amplify, the dignity we offer another person, and the calm that remains after we have gone.
The measure of peace may not only be what we feel within ourselves, but what becomes possible around us because we were there.
Peace leaves a wake.
Our responsibility is to keep the ripple moving outward to perpetuate peace.
